The Summer Growth Challenge 2015 project is written by Kevin Kusunoki. He loves mentoring students, watching baseball and reliving his days as the frontman of a boy-band.
Dallas Willard, one of my favorite authors of all time, said this about the value of memorizing scripture: “Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation. If I had to choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our minds with what it needs. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth. That’s where you need it! How does it get in your mouth? Memorization”.
Chuck Swindoll writes, “There is no other single exercise that pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your faith will be solidified”.
Scripturally, there are numerous accounts of the Word being memorized and utilized. From David proclaiming in Psalm 119 how he’s “stored up” the Word in his heart so that he might not sin against the Lord, to Jesus using scripture to defend himself against the temptations of the devil. There is a lot of value in memorizing scripture, sadly it is a discipline that many of us (included me) overlook. So that’s why this summer we will engage in a Summer Growth Challenge that we’ve never tried before: memorizing a book of the Bible! Over the next 60 days, we will be following a YouVersion bible reading plan that can be downloaded on any smartphone.
This plan will slowly guide us towards the memorization of the whole book of 2 Peter. Each day will also contain a small devotional on the verses to be memorized. Let’s really jump into this with all that we’ve got! Allow the Word of God to truly be implanted on our hearts!
